Does Natural Hormone Replacement Work?

Hormone replacement therapy or hrt isn’t the answer to every woman’s desire for symptom relief. Many women decide not to use traditional hrt, and some others find that they are not suitable candidates for hrt as a result of a personal or family medical history. Medical complications are not the only reason some women choose to search for an alternative to hrt. Some of the reasons women cite for choosing an alternative in the form of a natural hormone replacement therapy, include: troublesome side effects of hrt - breast tenderness, bloating, depression, irritability and bleeding; fear of an increased risk of cancer, and an aversion to the “medicalisation” of a natural process.

In today’s society, the emphasis has shifted slightly away from medications prescribed by a family GP, to more and more of the population seeking alternatives to hrt in the form of natural hormone replacement therapy, or natural hrt. Women have been using herbs to combat the symptoms of the menopause for many centuries. In fact, it is only in the last century that any alternative has been available. As pharmaceutical science has evolved over the last one hundred years or so, so has our understanding of the benefits of supplementing a healthy diet with vitamin and minerals.

In today’s world nearly every woman will be taking some form of vitamin, herb or nutritional supplement of some kind, at some time in their lives, if not throughout their lives. The majority of health care experts recommend that women supplement a healthy diet with certain vitamins and minerals as they approach their menopause. As a woman’s body begins to change with the approach of the menopause, its nutritional needs will change also. The effects of hormonal imbalance and depletion present special problems that many women prefer to address through the use of natural hormone replacement therapy, and natural hrt.

These women turn to botanical compounds, plant and herb extracts and nutritional supplements to alleviate the symptoms of the perimenopause, and to offset the physical changes the body may experience as a result of oestrogen depletion and the natural aging process. What women should remember is that they need all the information they can  possibly get a hold off before deciding on natural hormone replacement therapy, or a natural hrt. Botanical extracts and nutritional supplements are not subject to an Medicines Control Agency approval and therefore the consumer is responsible for making the wisest, most informed choice when buying these products.
